The answer to my “ why” started with an idea….
The idea for this book came straight from my classroom. As I searched for a resource to help my second-grade students understand the Pledge of Allegiance, I realized I couldn’t find a book that explained it in the way I envisioned. Rather than settle for “close enough,” I decided to write the story I wished I had found.
Through the eyes of George, a curious second-grade boy, children are invited on a journey to discover why we recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning and what those words truly mean. My hope is that this story does more than help children memorize the pledge. I hope it encourages meaningful conversations, inspires an appreciation for our country, and helps young readers understand the values of unity, freedom, respect, and responsibility that this pledge represents.
It is my hope that every child who reads this book will not only learn the words of the Pledge of Allegiance but also carry its meaning in their hearts.
Forefathers Monument
When I decided to write the book Why the Pledge of Allegiance, I knew I wanted to include the National Monument to the Forefathers. I had never heard of it until I watched the documentary, Monumental. After learning about it, my husband and I visited the monument in 2024 and were amazed by its beauty and significance.
I was especially impressed by how thoughtfully it was designed and how it honored the history and the beliefs of the United States. It is a biblical road map on how to set up a government by the people.
Although my book gives you a snapshot of the monument. The monument actually wraps all the way around, allowing visitors to experience each section and appreciate its size and detail.
Creating the Lizard
When I was creating this book, I knew I needed a sidekick that could add to the storyline. I chose a lizard native to the Sonoran Desert since the story takes place in Arizona. I did a little sketch for the artist and sent her a picture of the lizard in its actual habitat. Because my wonderful illustrator is from the Northwest, using this type of reptile was new to her as we tried to create just the right look and attitude for this lizard character!
One day during our weekly Zoom call, the illustrator was excited to tell me that she had just visited an exhibit where the same lizard we were designing was on display for the public. The photo below is the one she shared with me!
I laughed out loud when I saw it! He had given us exactly what we needed for the drawing to be completed!!
This little guy was so much fun to make a part of the storyline!
PS: Readers might be interested in knowing that the color of the lizard is accurate!!! What a fun project it would be to research this little guy!
